Donna Regina – More

"Maybe its Regina Janssen’s voice that conjures up images of ‘60s Left Bank frippery; whatever, if you don’t feel all warm and cosy after listening to To Be Around there’s no hope for you."

Nice LP this; I know very little of Donna Regina; apparently Wolfgang Flur of Kraftwerk fame is fascinated by them. And if it’s good enough for Wolfgang…

Kicking the proceedings off, More is a repeating riff that idles around for a couple of minutes, eschewing vaguely positive messages along the way. Cry Baby carries on in the same vein; simple, repetitive piano riffs seem to be their strong suit as well as quiet, basic pop hooks. There’s a dreamy, easy listening feel to this LP; it’s always upbeat, albeit in a quiet, underhand way as Good Morning Day and Shape My Day will testify. Maybe its Regina Janssen’s voice that conjures up images of ‘60s Left Bank frippery; whatever, if you don’t feel all warm and cosy after listening to To Be Around there’s no hope for you.

The best track by far is the nine minute Heart Oh Heart; which doesn’t seem to do anything at all but does it in a very charming way. (If you now what I mean).

Worth a listen if you’re feeling dreamy.
