The Steals are very, very good at what they do, but making love on a gravestone under a full moon while wearing fake fangs and black eye shadow may have to sound appealing to you if you want to get the most out of it. I don’t mean to be too stereotypical but if your favourite colour sounds like clack or nurple then you’ll like this album. If you read Gothic Literature then you’ll like this album. If you think Whitby is one of the most romantic places on Earth, then you’ll like this album. If you think graveyards make interesting holiday destinations then you’ll definitely love this album. Then again, if you just like music that contains droney guitars, ethereal female vocals and songs that don’t really go anywhere for about half an hour, then you’ll like this album too.

Like I said, The Steals are very, very good at what they do. Static Kingdom is full of droney guitars (well played), haunting female vocals (beautifully sung) and it creates an atmosphere that is well worth sinking your ears into if you’ve got the time for it. If you feel like doing anything – and I mean anything at all other than breathing – for the length of it, then it may well disappoint, but if you’ve got the time to just stare off into the distance for a while, you’ll find something incredibly beautiful here. In other words, if you’ve ever managed to read Wuthering Heights without wanting to throw yourself off a cliff, then this could well be the album you want to add to your Christmas list.
