Big Truck – One Long Saturday Night

Good run of the mill metal and good, run of the mill metal ballads. I can certainly see these guys cracking the American market and playing the main stage at the Download Festival

Big Truck – One Long Saturday Night

The 1970s are back! Well, that’s what the cover of One Long Saturday Night says to me. There’s a silhouette of a reclining woman on the front and she’s doing some sort of yoga move on the back (so you can see the outline of her breasts). The CD itself continues this theme: there she is sitting, propping herself up. It’s rather like the credits on a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. But enough of the looks; let’s press play.

O.L.S.N marks its entrance with squealing guitar and a driving rhythm; only for the bass to come and shift the song up another gear. Yup, my head is nodding along quite happily. Then the vocals come in and it must be noted right here that boy this guy can sing. But you know what? It’s a bit clean for me… a bit too produced. Oh, then it all slows down for a melancholic guitar solo and some wistful vocals. Sure, it all builds up again for a satisfying crescendo, but you knew it would.

Bones is more of the same; powerful metal. And Desire Empire is a ballad (sort of), these boys are tender too. And that’s about it. Good run of the mill metal and good, run of the mill metal ballads. I can certainly see these guys cracking the American market and playing the main stage at the Download Festival, but I can’t see them troubling my stereo again, not unless they get grimier.
