Never boring, never forced, always coming at you from an unexpected angle, this LP leaves a lot of its competitors standing.

I do like 65daysofstatic, they’re so bloody intense and committed. The Destruction of Small Ideas finds the band re-treading familiar territory; the titles are typically grandiose (try The Distant and Mechanised Glow of Eastern European Dance Parties) and the music still consists of symphonic, romantic guitar-led sweeps punctured by slabs of percussion.

When We Were Younger and Better is a magnificent opening track; in many ways key to the LP. The piano brings a note of frailty to the proceedings, and the organic nature of the drumming really gives the track a lot of warmth.

Indeed the piano playing really adds a great deal to the structure of the songs (I wonder if a lot were written on a piano… it certainly seems so); the morose Don’t Go Down Sorrow is a beautiful case in point.

In case anyone needed reassuring that they hadn’t gone all soft, Wax Futures is classic 65days thump and the epic These Things You Can’t Unlearn is nothing short of magnificent. It’s pretty visionary stuff. Elsewhere, Music is Music offers an interesting take on scales, whilst The Conspiracy of Seeds is a killer last track, building from a maudlin violin line into a tremendous – and at times screeched – tract, in some ways reminiscent of Arcade Fire (but far better).

Never boring, never forced, always coming at you from an unexpected angle, this LP leaves a lot of its competitors standing.

Check it out.
