The name should give something away; I mean it must have something to do with Harmonia mustn’t it? Harmonia’s sonic antithesis? Sure enough the opening track Moving Heavy Machinery does sound like Moebius & Rodelius (albeit more Cluster than Harmonia). I’m not grumbling though, it’s a fabulous, slobbering piece of electronic experimentation and at seventeen minutes it doesn’t cut corners. Just in case you were feeling short-changed, the follow up Evolving Numbers is sixteen minutes, though this is a High Church lament; sounding for all the world as if Syd Barrett has broken in through the vestry and is messing about with his local church organ and a Casio.
Apparently Harmwierda is the moniker for a slightly mad bugger up in Groningen; a place where they breed their musicians tough and ready for anything. Ready enough to have the gumption to change from seventeen minute Krautrock mood pieces to one minute interludes. Shockingly there are two in tandem, one sounding like Klaus Dinger’s answer phone. However frivolity is banished once we get to Configuration Overload and The Whispering Vine; they are just plain spooky. But never, ever boring. It’s classic sci-fi.
I am rapidly becoming a massive fan of this. I suggest (if you’re in the mood for some out-there organ recitals) to get this.
