Its not often we get a trip hop (a term used very lightly in this case) of this quality. A fabulous set of observations, taped voices, tremendous rap Strateegery (Featuring K-The !???) is just… brilliant. Ah, one should not be unduly surprised, for this is DJ Mayonnaise, formerly of the Anticon label, whose LPs were played and loved by this reviewer some time back.
Apparently this is the first thing DJ Mayonnaise has done since the late ’90s… I had to admit I was nervous of quoting late ’90s references, (laziness I suppose…) but there is a laid back, pre-millennial feel to this set. Check out the opener, Post Reformat and Dawson‘s Anthem 2005 for proof. DJ Mayonnaise has an obsession with effects and atmospheres it seems; Munjoy Moments has a great deal of textural shape-shifting and some very Krautrock synths (has he been listening to Cluster? I hope so). Its not all morose reflection, Quiet on the Set is a raucous slice of scratching and pacing and The Windham Song is a funny scuzz-fest par excellence.
In short, it’s a great record. Highly recommended.
