Nice one!

I like the Handsome Furs, they’ve got something a leetle different about them (given the plethora of Canadian bands, duos and "interesting" / "found sounds" bands Incendiary has been inundated with this past twelvemonth). Maybe it’s the quality of the songs and their presentation. I do warn you, you have to be in the mood for some reflective downbeat observations… Still, What We Had is a brilliantly lachrymose opener, and sets the tone for the rest of the LP; a gloriously fuzzy guitar informs the song throughout and plays counterpoint to the soulful meanderings of the vocals.

The gloriously titled Handsome Furs Hate This City is a great lament, set over a mournful keyboard coda. Snakes on the Ladder shares this lo-fi gloriousness, there’s even a bit of up-tempo drumming thrown in. Highlights of the proceedings are Sing! Captain, a song that combines a plethora of silly lo-fi keyboards with a rumbling, shambling monologue, whereas Dead and Rural is as close to dance as you’re likely to get here. It’s all tremendous stuff.

A word too for the stunning illustration work that graces the cover and booklet, it’s lovely.
