Another fabbo release from Anticon; and ex cLOUDDEAD member Odd Nosdam’s ninth solo LP in as many years… this lad really doesn’t muck about. I confess I’m a casual fan; I enjoyed Burner and Your American Bonus… and I have to say that on the strength of about 10 listens Level live Wires might be my favourite by some distance. It’s pretty much classic Odd Nosdam, samples are intertwined in rich layers of sound, and harmony is ever present (witness the beautiful harp sample on Kill Tone). The gradations of texture are noticeable on Freakout 3 which strays almost into My Bloody Valentine territory before disappearing in a screech.
Fat Hooks is a supremely lazy chord progression, waltzing off with the spirit of Ulrich Schnauss at times. The Kill Tone Two takes the essentials of the earlier track and morphs it into a drugged rap – courtesy of Tunde Adebimpe. Listen out for the tremendously slow build up on Up In Flames, a weird spiral mix, seemingly caught forever in a dreamy loop. Fabulous stuff.
