British Sea Power – Krankenhaus

Krankenhaus? is exactly as this band should sound; weird, loveable and belonging in a place utterly removed from the cynical machinations of the music industry.

The campaign to get Krankenhaus? released in Europe starts here. Only released in the States (as a sort of album sampler) and the UK, Krankenhaus? carries on the thumping, assertive vibe created by the new LP Do You Like Rock Music? Two tracks from the LP sit on this EP; the explosive(!?) Atom, which incidentally sounds a hell of a lot more assured on here – maybe because it’s the opener – and the winsome, trippy and eventually elegiac Down on the Ground. BSP are leaving it in no doubt that they really, really mean business this time around.

This EP is, quite literally, the soundtrack to an acid fried ramble in the moors. As well as Down on the Ground, the brilliant Cope-style Straight Down the Line is a story of one of Hamilton’s escapades in Cumbria. The provenance of both Hearing Aid and The Pelican we feel should be left undisturbed for the sake of everyone’s sanity. The Pelican’s obsession with giving you tinnitus is almost inspiring.

Krankenhaus? is exactly as this band should sound; weird, loveable and belonging in a place utterly removed from the cynical machinations of the music industry. If we lose this lot to the Real World we’ve had it, mark my words.

PS: If you have access to a media player you get a great concert performance and a rocking video.
