Gowns – Red State

This is fantastic, loopy, druggy lo-fi. It reminds this old git of Bongwater at times, (especially on the opener Fargo) but only in spirit.

This is fantastic, loopy, druggy lo-fi. It reminds this old git of Bongwater at times, (especially on the opener Fargo) but only in spirit. White Like Heaven is full on drugs music, utterly wanton yet tense beyond belief. That this track is partially mixed by Carla Bozulich comes as no surprise. The music is quiet, slow moving but incredibly powerful, and Erika Anderson’s voice is emotive and restless, creating a convincing story of psychedelic transportation.

Elsewhere, Lie Down is a sinister folk whisper not a million miles away from Spiritualised. Mercy rocks out in a transcendental way after a very quiet opening with a weird vocoder voice telling us listeners a story near the end of the track. And it’s most unnerving… Subside noodles along very menacingly, mixing the odd Cluster-esque noise with strings whereas Advice is a treated guitar with a dismembered voice floating in now and again.

A very interesting LP. I’d like them to take all this a bit further.
