Great cover on this band’s CD, it must be said. It comprises two topless ladies, one throwing the other into a lake. As to the music…. well, it’s pleasant and pretty straight forward folk-pop. Actually that sounds a bit mean. It’s better than that. Moonbeams has a sense of balance; it is shrewd enough not to over-egg the pudding, as a release like this could get all sentimental and sticky. Luckily tracks like Lolita or Conquering Kids keep things sparse and slightly deranged.
Now and again the song structures and riffs bring Guided by Voices to mind, but not for long. Elsewhere, things fall apart or are deconstructed (horrible word) in an enjoyably shambolic way as in Your Girlfriend’s Car and Yucatan Gold.
But before we forget, this is a pop record at heart, concerned with chatting girls up and having a good time without getting too deep. And in that aim it succeeds pretty well. Groundswell is the best track on here, summing up the good time vibes by way of some righteous trumpet blowing in the chorus.
Intelligent pop, and worth a listen.
