Another cracking release from Holland’s finest purveyors of intelligent noise. I’m not quite sure what it is about Julie Mittens’ collective howl that quickens the pulse; maybe trying to buttonhole their Muse would be wrong anyway. From what I can gather these are concert performances. I’m pretty damn sure that the two shattering performances entitled December 12 2006 is the gig that tore down walls at State X New Forms festival, (leading Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore to gush “those dudes are off the wall, man”).
No matter, they are beautiful recordings, each possessing an inherent glacial melody that becomes apparent if played at low volume. Especially good on the December recordings are the rumbling, busy bass lines and the way the drums create an almost delicate framework for Aart Jan Schakenbos’s guitar to take off from. If on the other hand you’re into having a jet-fighter in your room, I’d suggest turning up April 3 2007 to a reasonable volume. The twenty-odd minute April 25 2007 starts as a slovenly trawl that builds up into a fantastic crescendo of wired drumming, gluey bass lines and coruscating guitar delay. It’s not really for the faint of heart.
Top stuff, highly recommended for noiseniks and free-rock heads.
