Derek Raymond, James Johnston and Terry Edwards – I Was Dora Suarez

This is a very gruelling listen, but it’s certainly gripping. I had problems in actually pressing the stop button, however much I wanted to at times. And this is definitely not one for a late night’s spin whilst on your own, that’s for sure.

Goodness me this is dark stuff. People of a nervous or unquiet disposition shouldn’t really listen to this grisly set of tales. Author Derek Raymond’s obsession with the murder of Dora Suarez finds its ghoulish form in this early ‘90s re-issue. Raymond reads a set of very, very disturbing tales about a set of murders over an incredibly sensitive and atmospheric score.

Reading the sleeve notes seems to confirm what I thought when I first put this LP on; that Raymond immersed himself so thoroughly in the murderer’s psyche that it led to a personal breakdown of sorts; certainly you can hear extreme disquiet in the obsessive, driven tone of his monologues. It’s not that he relishes his narrative, or indeed fleshing out the various characters personas; rather it is as if he feels the need to leave no stone unturned, to document in microscopic and chilling detail the feelings and actions of the victim and the perpetrator.
