How I love Anssi 8000 and his cowboy Finnish punk. There’s something ever so slightly remedial about his music that is incredibly appealing. This is stripped back country rock, Jerry Lee/Buddy Holly style, albeit frosted round the edges.

New partner in crime Maria Stereo comes across as some Finno-Ugric ice maiden, especially in the (bizarrely titled) Sleeves of Jesus, where her strident tone is an effective counter balance to something that could get a bit maudlin. She really shines on the Neanderthal rumble of Eye of an Animal too. Not to be outdone, Anssi follows this up by sounding like a man with a lot of social problems on Riot… and when the phasing kicks in near the end you know you’re listening to a classic.

There are attempts at love songs, such as Chariots of Love, Bad Moon Set, or the fabulous pop song Zombie but they’re all too strident to get too mushy. It’s an invigorating listen, that’s for sure.

Pop-tastic this LP most certainly is. Check it out without delay.
