Sin Fang Bous – Clangour

Despite the odd super-twee moment, it’s a very, very enjoyable pop LP. One for summer.

Well this is a surprise, and no mistake. The bloke behind all this used to be in Seabear, whose minor key vibe I quite liked, in a non-committal way. I certainly wasn’t expecting such a wide-eyed, or such an eclectic pop record. Still, Morr Music does churn out some surprising releases.

Anyhow, if you like yearning Beach-Boys/C86 flavoured psych-pop, floating around in a post-Screamadelica come-down daze, then this is for you. Luckily, (for those of a more prosaic bent), in common with all records that seemingly float off into blissed-out territory, there are traditional structures underpinning the whole set. Catch the Light, Carry Me Up to Smell Pine, or Advent Inivisgarden might sound slightly bonkers but they are classic old sing-alongs underneath. And Melt Down the Knives could be the bloody Pastels.

The soothing hippy vibe is always to the fore, Sunken Ships starts off like Amon Duul2’s See the Light (albeit a very poppy AD2) before it settles down into lullaby mode. Near the tail-out it even gets Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake on our collective asses. Despite the odd super-twee moment, it’s a very, very enjoyable pop LP. One for summer.
