A nice little EP this, made all the more loveable by the fact that it comes as a beautiful 12 inch vinyl. Just take a look at that back cover as well. There’s something about how pretentious and pompous it is that just makes me smile, but there’s nothing over-confident about the music. We’re in standard singer-songwriter territory here, but that’s not a criticism. It’s actually a really pleasant and soothing record to listen to and I’d direct anyone with a passing interest in Jeff Buckley or Josh Ritter in this direction. That’s not to say that Mr Huie is as accomplished as those two artists, but he’s certainly got potential and the warm, cheerful mood that permeates this EP is enough to make you want to hear more about him.

Huie has a really warm and impressive range to his voice and opening song Brighter Dark shows it off quite well, but I prefer Matinee as it’s the kind of song Aimee Mann does so well, floating between joy and sorrow effortlessly. Porcela is another highlight, although it does sound like Jeff Buckley without the drama, but closer Hum is worth the price of admission, if only because it’s slow jazz back beat and jangly guitars mean it could almost be mistaken for lift music if it weren’t so bloody effortless and charming.
