This LP has sat around on my stereo for months, and quite why I haven’t reviewed it as yet is beyond me, because it’s bloody good and I keep playing it when I have a moment. Solace is the fifth LP from John Tejada and Takeshi Nishamoto, the duo who make up I’m Not a Gun, and you can certainly hear the fact that they’re an established act, as the overriding impression throughout Solace is that of a band who are at ease with their muse, and happy to explore the various aspects that drive it in their own time.
Tejada and Nishamoto are adept at conjuring up slightly abstract urban soundscapes, such as on Colored Sky, Colored Mind, which nods to post rock and fusion: or a lighter more acoustic side, in Runners. There is a strong romantic element to the music, but it is music with a tough spine, too: it’s not all “brainfood”, and there are also plenty of moody passages to balance things out. Turbine is a determined opener with more than a hint of the night about it. And some moments, especially on Equal Path, or Red Yellow and Blue remind me of the Durutti Column, albeit a muscular, more rhythmic Durutti Column. Things even get dewy – eyed on Cold Dream with the chiming guitars and a sparkling synth part.
