Fun, winsome pop which isn’t as gauche as it threatened to be at first listen. This, I think, is down to a number of reasons: firstly the girl’s voice has a soul rasp to it that always feels like it could break through and totally dominate proceedings. That it doesn’t is a shame, but the threat that it might is still enjoyable enough – especially on tracks like Down and Out or In My Dreams. Then there’s a nice mash of sixties girl pop and the stripped back sounds of late 70’s bands like Pylon, which creates enough tension to keep things interesting. They keep it simple, direct and rely on tempo, space and mood. Plus songs like Blackeye, Leather Glove or Skeleton Key aren’t the usual bedroom dreamer fluff. As befits this record, I’ll keep to the point and not waste any more words than I need to. I’ll just ask that you give it a listen.
