A very good LP indeed, made up of soulful cuts, funny samples and some serious cosmic messaging. The band’s name does conjure up the 1990s – (you know, Midfield General, etc.), as does their music in some ways, its soulful, slightly funky and fuzzy vibe seems to take interest in repositioning various old and found sounds. The opening tracks, California, SuperWarrior and Level 8 and reek of that 1990s interest in welding a groove onto old analogue sounds and make it pretty and shiny like a new toy, whilst of course referencing some leisure time pursuit du jour – in this case gaming. It’s fun and attractive music for sure. Earth Attack has that same desire to pull things to pieces in a cheeky and fairly haphazard way as some single arrangements did on the Upsetter label.
I wouldn’t say the record’s an exercise in nostalgia for the sake of it though; the last – and longest – track Yoga Flame is as close to the current musical zeitgeist as it is possible to get. You also get the feeling this is the song, along with the marvellous pop song Call to Arms that they’ve invested the most into. I really like this a lot.
