Trojan Horse Rotovator – Hyper Onanism EP

This has something about it, though to be honest I’m not sure whether it’s my nostalgic relief at someone picking up the cartoon KMFDM / Revolting Cocks spirit that’s the driving force for me here.

OK so we have this from Trojan Horse Rotovator, whose press release persuaded us we had to listen. Make of it what you will.

“Trojan Horse Rotovator is the computer-music reject by Arthur Heyseekay (also known as HCK, Art H.C. Kleimann, Klee T. Ruin) actually based in Berlin, Germany. Listeners used to define its vibes as cyberpunk, postindustrial, ambient, noise, coldwave. Apart of genre labels, THR music is mainly strictly linked to monetary seignorage fight (more infos on www.troro.info).”

On to the EP.

The opening track, Mass Voyeur is suitably paranoid (as it should be given its title) alternating between cold slabs of synth meditation and the kind of screaming, screeching, shuddering chorus breaks that you are either going to love or hate. It’s simple, confrontational high octane stuff, very direct music that sticks to a certain pattern: not to say that it isn’t a lot of fun, it is and it certainly harks back to the kind of confrontational agenda-driven music that we’ve been missing this last 15 years or so, so we’re onside on that score.  Elsewhere, the gloopy vox on Guish and the sequenced hand claps that start up Idols Galore remind me of Luc van Acker’s material, Idols Galore is possibly the most enjoyable of the three tracks with its funny vox – but then, the vocals are a welcome counterpoint throughout – in that the range between the histrionic screeching, caterwauling and groaning does add a human touch amongst all the post-post-industrial clatter that roams free and unfettered throughout this EP.  This has something about it, though to be honest I’m not sure whether it’s my nostalgic relief at someone picking up the cartoon KMFDM / Revolting Cocks spirit that’s the driving force for me here.
