Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

I have a like/loathe relationship with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Depending on my moods, I either warm completely to their wistful, clap-happy charms or I want to strangle them. Here does nothing to sway me one way or another. Instead it continues along that fine line, straddling my patience threshold as if to test me at every opportunity. I quite enjoy  the opener Man On Fire, which sounds like Johnny Cash on valium. I even like the sound of what appears to be a digeridoo intruding proceedings at one point. I also fall completely head over heels for Mayla, although I’m still not entirely sure why and Child is an absolute delight.  On the other side of things, That’s That’s Up’s quirky vocals will stretch the patience of most people I would think but if you’re intoxicated enough I’m sure you could slap your thighs along in time to it without much fuss. I  cannot tolerate the chorus of I Don’t Wanna Pray however, which is so sickening to me it completely derails the rest of the song and destroys the meaning of the lyric altogether. But then, that’s me.

Listening to Here, I find myself forced me to tread a tightrope, fingers steadily hovering above the fast forward button, unable to truly relax and enjoy myself because I know that somewhere, just around the corner, I’m going to get annoyed and start spitting muesli at the speakers. I really shouldn’t find this kind of thing stressful  as I’m sure that wasn’t what they intended.

Maybe I should just lie down for a while. You can decide amongst yourselves if this kind of clap-happy nonsense is good enough for you or not.
