Constantines – Tournament of Hearts

“Rather like two men in an argument, it keeps reiterating the same points over and over again, whether it be sotto voce or fortissimo. Sorry lads…”

Constantines – Tournament of Hearts

Right this is a blokes LP. It’s on Sub Pop and the artwork has wolves, polar bears helicopters and men wearing building site helmets on it. So, sorry girls, I’d say that this is a blokes LP. I’ve already said that haven’t I?

The music doesn’t shatter any illusions that I have built up after perusing the visuals. The opener, Draw Us Lines contains all the pre-requisites of blokey music; especially American blokey music; namely husky all-action vocals, thumping drums, thrashing guitar, plodding melody and introspective lyrics. Its okay but it doesn’t go anywhere foe me. Rather like two men in an argument, it keeps reiterating the same points over and over again, whether it be sotto voce or fortissimo. Sorry lads…

Highlights are Soon Enough and Thieves; tracks that escape the straight jacket of bloke rock and are pretty affecting pieces of music. Soon Enough is a quiet piece that sometimes breaks into a jaunty run. Thieves is a sweet love song of sorts that contains enough light and shade in it to make it an diverting piece.

So there you have it. Not for me I’m afraid, but whoever listened to me?

Words: Richard Foster.
