You can’t beat cracking opening tracks, and Womanizing Metal Studs is one such. It’s an odd growling hybrid of very early Chicago-style West Coast rock and Soft Boys quirky psychedelia. But bloody effective none the less with the strange playoff between the almost choral outbursts, pattering drum beat and menacing guitar runs.
Space seems to be important to Masshivers; there doesn’t seem to be any pressure to fill their music up with extraneous volume or sound effects. When things do kick off, it is all the more effective for it; as on Quinine Peninsula Pt 2. Elsewhere, slightly obsessive stoner grooves are ground out for all they are worth (Downwind of Amour and Tense and Anxious). Sometimes we’re into Amon Duul 2 style free-form guitar thrashes, (Because the Sun); whereas at other times it’s ever so slightly Zappa-esque (Mossy Nethers) but I’m not going to hold my distrust of Zappa against Ecstatic Eyes Glow Glossy. Far from it. I suggest you investigate without delay.
