Sleeping Dog – Polar Life

I think this album is dedicated to a pet dog. The band certainly thanks their animal friends, and as the cover has the silhouette of what seems to be two bears kissing.

I think this album is dedicated to a pet dog. The band certainly thanks their animal friends, and as the cover has the silhouette of what seems to be two bears kissing. And guess what? The music turns out to be twee, fragile stuff. One of the songs (The Sun Sinks in the Sea) is inspired by a poem and the usual plethora of instruments are used, including, I’m overjoyed to say, a mellotron. Not that twee is all bad, oh no. This is actually a very appealing LP, boasting a couple of cracking tracks; If Only is a beautifully shimmering moment in time full of melancholy and regret whereas Sunshine Daylight is a slightly psychedelic folk lament. And the opening song Prophets is pretty special too; a serious piano-led plod topped off with an extremely ghostly vocal take.
