Crash bang wallop. Ooh what a picture. The Brownies are a loud little four piece that like to thrash around and wail quite a bit. The album’s produced by Jon Gray, who’s worked with The Subways and Andy Gill (wahey!) of Gang of Four fame, so if you’re familiar with either of those guys, then you’ll pretty much know what to expect from this. Sharp guitars, pounding drums and a lot of energy. The Brownie’s aren’t in a Gang of Four league, or even that of The Subways, but they’re not too bad. They’re just very two dimensional.

There’s no denying the appeal of something like Cougar, which is the kind of punky little rock song that most garage bands spend years trying to create and fail miserably at. You’ve also got to like a band at least a little when they can come up with lines like, “There’s something wrong when you’ve got more photoshoots than songs,” but if you’re looking for a little texture in your songs, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

They’re loud, they’re fast and they’re certainly energetic, but we may have to wait for the second album before we get truly excited about them.
