Broken Shoulder – Broken Shoulderr

I suppose a reference wouldn’t go amiss: musically we’re in lo-fi Tim Hecker territory, or even Earth, albeit an Earth armed solely with Casios and a bunch of pedals..

Now I would advise a little patience, for this is an album that reveals its secrets only after a few careful listens. It’s not something designed to immediately appeal, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t give it a good go. The gloopy, fuzzy nature of the music allows a very pleasant feeling of meditative torpor to be reached after about ten minutes of adjustment. After that it’s a really great listen all the way through.

You are “confronted” the LP’s vibe with the right from the opening piece Morning is Broken. The track’s ramshackle, stumbling muse is in many ways a disguise; sounds and textures appear and drift by quite serenely, like flotsam on a slow moving river. Chocolate One Room Disco is a similar experience, minimal to the point of sloth; but the track hangs around long enough for the listener to appreciate the underlying swells and shifts of sound, before drifting off.

I suppose a reference wouldn’t go amiss: musically we’re in lo-fi Tim Hecker territory, or even Earth, albeit an Earth armed solely with Casios and a bunch of pedals; and some of the tracks wonder whether to morph into a Cluster outtake or not before giving up the ghost; (Sato Costume is one such). Even where there are deliberately dissonant elements introduced, such as in Stille Nacht and Uff / Magon, the sounds are arranged so that nothing is there to shock you out of the reflective state you begin to find yourself in.

Recommended.
