Obits – Moody Standard and Poor

A good record, nothing new, but it does what it sets out to do.

I like Obits, they’re not complicated, they rock out and they rock out hard and clean.

They have a good, driving sound, that owes something to the Elevators’ more energetic moments or even, with that jangle CSNY, (albeit, obviously a little harder and a little faster). Their song titles give an indication that they see themselves in some ways as classic garage punks: (Spot the Pikey, I Want Results, You Gotta Lose etc, etc, all very much like the Litter), it’s all good fun. The opener is a great stomping anthem, and the one that sounds like a speeded up take on Mr Soul or a Bad Moon track for that matter.  I Want Results – another stomp – has a darker vibe about it: mixing a Can groove and a monolithic melody that would sit pretty on a Mötörhead LP. Following that Everything Looks Better in the Sun has a pleasing refrain, whilst not really deviating from the template. It’s about this point you realise that this is the music you are going to get – in spades – if you continue to listen to this record. Still it would be unfair to say the record is two dimensional. Now and again the tempo drops, to good effect, with the scuzzy Shift Operator and to slightly maudlin effect, with I Blame Myself. The swagger of Naked to the World (which sounds a bit like The Saints in the way the song is put together) and the spidery strut of New August are very appealing too. And there are daft moments to break up the determined, slightly gruff air: Spot the Pikey being the obvious winner.
