What a fine record, one of the better atmospheric releases I’ve heard recently. The tracks are for the most part vast brooding essays in what seems to be a sort of enjoyable slacker melancholy, slow, certain, and pitched at a level where the smallest touch on the tiller is very effective. This control is incredibly impressive throughout, patience is something that can get overlooked but the opener, Larven sets the tone: balancing a slow swinging chord progression against some slightly offbeat, slightly polyrhythmic drumming and what sounds like a set of carefully attuned delay effects and loops.
The whole record’s pitched around a set of mid-tones that bring to mind some of the more melodic post rock efforts of about 15 years ago with elements of that drowsy, deserted playroom feel that records such as Moon and the Melodies had. At times it’s a bit like some of the soundscapes Machinefabriek deals in too. There are some essays in shimmering, dissolving sound, such as Tramadol and Fentanyl. Other moments, most noticeably in Dupleix and Bellville showcase a whole raft of sludgy heavy elements that are enjoyably sloth-like. Bellville does try to take of at times but keeps itself in check just when you think everything’ s going to spill over.
