Moon Duo – Shadow of the Sun

Quite possibly the most inconsequential review I’ve had to write on this magazine. You really don’t need me to say that you’ll dig it if you dig their other records.

Another enjoyable tumble through the ever-fruitful, sunlit Neverneverland known as Psyche Rock. Man, Moon Duo really know how to press the right buttons; however worn or sticky with use. And you won’t be surprised to learn that they haven’t embarked on their dubstep phase just yet. But this is the thing I’ve always enjoyed about this band; like Thee Oh Sees, they just get on with what they do best with no hang ups.

And this is a highly enjoyable listen. Their play-dumb mesh of Kraut, Velvets, Seeds, Suicide, Pebbles and California Soul may be the most contrived thing about (listen to that chord pattern in Slow Down Low for proof) but boy they are masters at presenting their work. It always feels intricate AND fresh. How do they manage it? There aren’t so many obvious toe-tappers like Run Around on Shadow of the Sun, but the measured, laid back groove that starts with Wilding and locks the listener down in the marvellously creepy Night Beat doesn’t let up throughout. There are bits that draw from the naffest of sounds; some of the keys in Zero are dead basic; but basic like 96 Tears, or Electricity basic. The only noticeable change comes with the great slowie, In A Cloud, a beautiful old barrage balloon gently floating about, doing nothing in particular except fire off a cosmic guitar solo or two.
