MDMP – Voltage

A very, very interesting CD this one; as it’s utterly unlike any Dutch release I’ve heard. It is in no way the formulaic pop one associates with the Dutch music scene at present. The opening track of this EP Hitting the Ground opens with the sound of a tube train coming to a stop in a station. The track immediately kicks off into a sub-glitter stomp with muted vocals very reminiscent of Pere Ubu’s classic Final Solution single. "I don’ wanna" is an opening phrase that crops up with heartening regulaurity this song; it’s gloriously surly, very much into Iggy and all things Stoogy and I am very happy about that.

Light Years in Vain is softer but no less surly in approach. It has a fabulous Velvets, or late era Pixies sensibility; the ticking drum machine makes me think of the Bunnymen too. It dissolves into waspish guitar feedback by the end. A classic. Stand Back could be off a late Mary Chain release; it growls along in a monolithic way, giving out surly glances ats it strolls down the street. Absurdly simple and basic in its creation, it is absolutely fucking briliant.
