Band Of Horses – Everything All The Time

(Sub Pop – Konkurrent)

Ornate, delicate melodic alt-rock with an elegant stylized pulse; fans of The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Death Cab For Cutie and Arcade Fire will fall in love with the Seattle based Band Of Horses.  It’s visually atmospheric music you can allow yourself to get lost in; or rather you want to get lost to, in the woods, at dust.

The album opens with the “curiously” named The First Song.  Later comes Our Swords which personifies itself with a great rhythmic melody.  Not just because of the connotations of the track title The Funeral, its sound is inherently tragic but contains subtle elements of lightness. At “every occasion I’ll be ready for the funeral”.   It really hits the listener with the realistic truth that at any moment we could in fact pass on, reminding us of the trials and joys of living.  Part One is a beautiful song that really reminds me of Holes by Mercury Rev.  Weed Party is one of the albums best gems if only because the song starts off with a “yee-ha!”.  It’s a catchy fantastic melancholic party song.   Monsters is also a great number and includes the lyrics, “if I am lost, it is only for a little while.”   Again excellent use of subtle lyrics laced with gracefully melodic tunes.

Everything All The Time is an easy-to-listen-to album but certainly not easy listening.  I felt intensely soothed whilst listening to this album.  Great for a reflection afternoon in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee or pot of tea and a book.
