Before anyone cries plagiarism and rushes to defend the Mary Chain’s honour, well it isn’t quite that simple. Linda Reid is younger sis to Jim & William Reid and had sung on the Munki LP. This LP is a family Reid collaboration with valuable assistance from luminaries such as Stephen Pastel. And as such the sound is pretty easy to classify, but hell, I’m not here to pick holes. It’s just lovely to hear those life-affirming chord progressions again, as on Delicat, Jamcolas and TOTP.
There are some great dreamy numbers; Pastel Blue and Slacker really set the tone for the LP, I do like the messy quality that is prevalent here and on Can’t Stop the Rock; with the acoustic haziness sometimes sounding like something only a supremely stoned James Kirk would attempt. The last track The Two of Us is a lovely, giddy pop song and a suitably dreamy ending to wrap things up
Now and again, everything shifts up a gear into some gloriously heart warming work outs. Angel and K to Be Lost are the stand out tracks on the set; the odes to Psycho Candy & Honey’s Dead on the latter will never be better expressed.
A lovely record.
