IN: Tell us about yourselves then…
MA: Well we formed about a year ago we were all good friends. Phil and Alan started off just writing a few songs, we didn’t really sound anything like we do now. Dave and Phil (drums) joined a few months later. Dave and Phil brought their own ideas to the band which helped us to achieve a sound we’re all happy and confident with. The new recordings are the first steps in a direction we’re all proud of, and committed to.
IN: You make (to these ears) disjointed, fractured pop with a lyrical twist… is that fair comment or am I being a bloody journalist?
MA: Ha ha! Well maybe!! But seriously, we do try to utilise all of our personal influences, which might make it seem disjointed, but we feel that it works well for our sound!! We put a lot of effort into writing the music and lyrics for the last two songs and hopefully this comes across.
IN: What is it you are looking to explore, musically? You seem to like big sweeping key changes and muted instrumentation… its very restless and clinical pop, concentrating on melodies and harmonies. I take it no multi instrumental gatefold sleeve prog rockathons are planned then?
MA: Definitely not!! That’s not really our area! We still like to sound unique, but we feel we can do this while still remaining commercial and accessible. I’d say, basically, we’re making pop music with a twist. Melodies are definitely a priority, they establish the feel and mood of the songs; a decent melody can turn an average song into a good one. The trick we’re trying to pull is to keep the music behind the melody energetic and interesting, whilst still remaining poppy.
IN: I noted an odd juxtaposition of influences; American Football and the Cure. Could you explain?
MA: American Football the band, not the game! Well the Cure were a more obvious influence on our older songs, but they still heavily influence our vocal melodies, if not necessarily the instrumentation, whereas American Football represent the opposite. We’re heavily influenced by their guitar style. Like any other band though our influences are constantly evolving.
