Darkxtar – We Came Too Late
The first track, Pitiful Whining, sticks in your mind. It has this repetitive tag which you cant get rid of and you find yourself singing along with the chorus pretty quickly, which may or may not be a good thing if you’re a progressive songwriter. Islanded is also a nice track, replete with nice words and voices, and a bit of electro Kraftwerk-y type stuff to break it up.
Oh, and the title track has the best lyrics and music I’ve heard in this sort of song for a while, and could really be a success as a single. I love the line “You don’t mind, you don’t mind – but you SHOULD care, you had flowers in your hair.” Speaking as one who did indeed have flowers in her hair, it made me feel rather guilty about the fact that, way back then, we maybe didn’t try hard enough, and look what happened since. Brilliant track. Also I love the way that the band occasionally steps in and surprises you; just where you were expecting a twangy guitar you get a haunting, almost Celtic violin solo.
Unfortunately, after the first couple of tracks, Darxtar seem to lose the plot a bit, and the second half of the album does become repetitive. Overall however, its a good album, and the sort of music to sit around in a circle chanting and swaying, wearing headbands, sagely nodding and say yes…yes……As a child of the 60’s, it instantly gave me a guilt trip…
