Syclops – I’ve Got My Eye On You

I’m not sure what I expected from this CD. It’s on DFA, so ‘dance’ I suppose, but probably the poppier end of dance. The first track on here, NR17, would probably be at home on Warp. Weird (and interesting) electronic noises swoop out of the keyboard for a while, before they’re joined by vaguely Latin rhythms (appalling). The Fly follows, which is much better: more upbeat, weirder electronic noises and no a hint of a Latin beat. At just over 6 minutes, it is a tad too long. Maybe someone needs to tell Syclops to rein it in a bit.

Naokas F becomes more relaxed, with a lush production, making for a very dull track indeed. This dullness continues with 5 Out, except this had a minute long break of pretty generic house beats in the middle. Nelson Back is almost good enough to be a Money Mark b-side with its fat, squelchy bass noises and driving piano rhythms. I could carry on, but suffice to say, the second half of this LP doesn’t deliver anything different from the first.  This isn’t a bad album, and in isolation the tracks may fit well into a compilation or soundtrack, but they simply don’t sit well together. And it’s all too much of a much-ness after a while.
