Another great Southern record release… The Rome-based math rock act produce a fun, Shellac-esque rock out record, with hints of jazz and heavy metal in parts. The record flows nicely from track to track, despite the constant rhythmic breaks and weird mystical bridges (best heard in the evil-sounding Chthonian).

You can easily listen to this record from start to finish as each song carries on the harsh chopping sound of the last, but in different and distinct ways. Carboniferous is, however, full of repetitions; meaning you have to be in a progressive sort of mood to really get into it, and critics (and those who aren’t fans of raw math rock) could accuse the record for being boring or too slow.
But while I can see it wont be a record that will drag new listeners into the genre, as a fan of the Shellac and early Slint, I find it refreshing to hear a modern math rock record go back to the more raw heavy rock roots, as opposed to the very frilly and overly technical sounds which are appearing more and more under the genre’s banner. If you’re a fan of proper early 90s style Math rock, give Carboniferous a go, I like it.
