A beautiful LP this one, but if you’re a big fan of AR Kane’s 69 you’ll have heard this kind of floating, dubby abstraction a good twenty years ago. Still, no point getting on my high horse, it’s a fine work, accessible, with enough woozy weirdness to fit most artistic requirements and very much in the spirit of recent releases from Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza. Take the title track for instance –essentially a monotone lament- which splendidly dissolves in a whirl of echoing voices.
It’s an urban LP in feel; (I’ve noticed this with other City Centre Offices releases, stuff from bands like Miwon… they all seem to all project images of displacement in a modern urban environment), check out the couplet It All Went Wrong and Fall In Love Like This. In other places the record a feeling of New Order’s Peel Sessions from 1982 and 1983; a metronomic (though much softer) beat, coupled with an understated shimmering mirage of sounds and space. Things get a tad somnolent now and again (That Won’t Heal By Itself A Lot of Work is Done) but stick in there, as the last track, This Is Order is a bit of a cracker, another low-key drone-athon, albeit with a Kraftwerk-style base and a New Order ‘PCL’ topping for good measure.
