The Jollity of My Boon Companion does bring up of Jeff Buckley with it’s reliance on dramatic settings, sweeping changes of mood and the almost devotional fervour of the vocal delivery: the magnificent change of tempo and mood in Wistful Longer is possibly the album’s highlight for your humble reviewer… There’s also a monastic element to the music which is very pronounced – check out Kind of Silent for proof.
The music is brilliantly handled (this should come as no surprise seeing as there the LP boasts a fair number of renowned musicians – such as Marc Ribot) and arranged. Luckily this expertise stops things becoming too academic, or (far worse), precocious. For example, the slobbering guitar noise that rips across Holler, Robert Fripp/Brian Eno style, informs the track in an extremely sexy, vaudeville way. The sort of cut ups, deliberate messes and aural full stops seen on Daytime remind one of the things Faust would do in their heyday. It isn’t far off Radiohead either. Taken collectively, this sonic approach is a brilliant indicator of how to sort arrangements on a record that could be construed as serious or (worse) “adult” and “intellectual”. Top track is Under Your Skirt, which is Gothic perversion personified.
