We really should have brought this record to your collective attention earlier: because it’s absolutely brilliant. Right from the baroque, ramshackle blast of the Introduction, through the bubbly Little Bird Courage, through to the end it’s the sound of a band having an absolute blast and not giving a shit what we think.
There’s a great upbeat feeling on Feral Harmonic, db levels or no. The Last Collapse sounds like it could wreck your speakers; such is its exuberance and vim. Next Flood is a great mix of tempo’s and moods, showing that for all the rocky stuff, the band can handle space. Still, that song is knocked into next week by the brilliantly simple The Sweet which balances precariously (but triumphantly) one note for three minutes or so. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, the track changes and turns into a slobbering instrumental beast that is slack of jaw and underpants rent agape…
There are plenty of sonic kicks if you look elsewhere. The positive Stuck builds into something beautiful by virtue of some energetic strumming, muted brass lines and the cymbals receiving a damned good bashing. Flower Faces is a messy love song, sticky sweet and all too short, whereas last track Southern Radio is a soft, affirmative ending, letting us down softly.
A mighty fine record and if you don’t own it, you should.
