Oh my… Now answer truthfully, when was the last time you heard snoring on a record? Well, if you haven’t you now have the chance, via Daydreaming So Early, track three on this frankly rather crazy release. The LP’s title gives the lie to the overall concept: yes, it’s a ‘vacation’, so we start by Checking In, which is a quirky instrumental that stylistically isn’t far away from the stuff Studio G churned out in the early 70s. At one point I thought the entire LP would be xylophone, keyboard and birdcall driven, though things do get more demented as we go along.
Master Moon is a charming enough shuffle, and the aforementioned Daydreaming So Early is a veritable kaleidoscope of sounds, snores and yes birdcalls. Complications and Off The Path follows in the same dreamy vein, albeit with what sounds like a kitten mewing, and I suppose there is an air of tension now and again in the latter track (very much like the “spooky” bit on Kraftwerk’s Autobahn)well…
After a few listens the whole thing becomes strangely addictive, and you feel a genuine sense of loss when you hear the last few bars of the maudlin Clearing Out. Strange, and not for the impatient.
