I like this a lot! It is pretty strange, has no real vibe, (despite it being the band’s 4th or 5th LP) and has the odd “Belgian moment”. Which is fair enough as they are Belgian, therefore very prone to introspection – you just knew there’d be a song called Fear – and sounding like Radiohead and giving tracks names like Memory As A Skull or making a track called When You Smile sound like a funeral ovation (albeit a pretty magnificent one)…
….but, but, but; the opener New Beginning is possibly one of my favourite weird non-pop pop songs of the year. It’s all over the place, and misses by miles, but it’s as if the Beach Boys went Emo. It’s brilliant. The rest of the LP is great too, Belgian bands never get too in yer face, even when they rock out (Rebel)and there’s always an elegant sense of restraint, which is very noticeable here on tracks like 4AM and Choose Yr Gods (a marvellous, melodic exercise in common sense)
