Sixty Watt Bayonets are here with their new single and its everything you’d ever want from an indie band coupled with something you may or may not want to avoid, depending on your tolerance for female vocalists that yelp a lot. I Wish I Was Your Girlfriend is fast and aggressive. The drums are played fast enough to make the guitarist and bass player shred their fingers trying to keep up with the beat, it goes from 0-60 in about half a second and keeps up the pace for a minute and a half until it all falls apart chaotically. Which is all brilliant, and I’m sure it’s the kind of thing that most indie fans will jump on board with instantly but over the top of that you have Penny Bayonets who sings, or should I say yelps, in a way that suggests she’s continually banging her little toe against something. Her vocal technique is an acquired taste, that’s for sure but it you can handle the yelping you’ll have a lot of fun with this. The B side isn’t half bad either.
I expect to hear a lot more energetic yelping in future. We’re staying tuned to this frequency even if you’re not.
