A tremendous LP this, comprising of four eclectic mixes, overseen and inspired by the lads from Faust, (Hans-Joachm Irmler is credited as "mentor and cook"). Regardless of any Krautrock madness form the masters of cut-up, DJ Marcelle is able in any case to make a right old sonic stew out of the most diverse ingredients imaginable. I’ll list some to show you. Yes, this might sound like padding out a review but it gives you, the reader an indication of the almost perverse nature of the sound-sources. David Byrne, Brian Eno, eats your hearts out…
The Donau Mix, for example, mixes, merges and manipulates extracts from… the river Donau itself, the radio show “Die Another Nice Mess Wundertüte, Mungo’s Hifi ft. Brother Culture and Senibua Kei Nadi Entertainment Group of Nadi Village Fifi… Lumme.
These mixes can hit the listener unawares. The sheer diversity of them can at times be a bit bewildering, especially when it comes to forming first impressions as to what you hear, but there’s no doubt when it hits the mark, this is dance music like no other. The tracks that work for me are the Safari Mix, which is the most joyous confrontation of bubbling German electro (augmented by trains such as DR Lokomotiven 44 0663-3 and 44 0231-9, German voices and… well, pig oinks) and dub work outs; and the Perfect Mix, which is a insouciant run through some dub, extracts from DJ Scotch Egg and some feisty jazz; all of which is bookended by a voice sample from East Lancashire, which is a bit bizarre to hear for this Lancastrian…
There are moments on the Donau Mix which offer great trance-like, bubbling work-outs which approach the feeling of cruising downstream on that mighty river… that is until Toni Et Son Groupe Wenaye burst in and shake the whole thing up again. And that, I suppose, is the key to listening to this LP; this isn’t music to second guess, as you can’t. Nothing is pre-ordained; nothing is certain to the listener outside of an acceptance that DJ Marcelle has brilliantly orchestrated the whole thing.
