Thee Oh Sees – Carrion Crawler and The Dream EP

The thud of the drums and the clash of the guitars give these pieces an almost tribal quality, you can see them being the soundtracks to an induction ceremony of a groovy cult or some such.

Wowee. A Red Blooded Rock Classic doing nothing more than reiterating just what a fucking Kosmische thrill good rock and roll is when given its full head.
I love this band -but after listening to this record, I really need to exaggerate and gush about the place, like some pissed up newly super-rich newcomer pissed on cider at a Surrey golf club Christmas raffle. This review is akin to the sort of thing that Mike Ashley did in re-hiring Kevin Keegan…  That level of rash, emotive decision-making. Motherfucker, I mean; this is a record that should be in every Head’s pad, tout suite.
It’s a total head-rush:  tracks like Chem Farmer, Heavy Doctor and Contraption / Soul Desert are bruising and dirt kicking work outs: leaving the listener with frayed lips, goggle eyes and tunnel vision (not to say a brain that ready to eject from the skull)… More up-tempo fun is to be had with Opposition and The Dream, which showcase a tinny Monks or Sabbath-like vibe, albeit one squeezed into a tiny sonic space… Round and round they go, like toy cars on a Scalectrix track. The bit where the one-note organ part comes on The Dream is Syd-tastic, and all the better for flaunting it.
Robber Baron and Crushed Grass are dizzying and shape-shifting sermons, delivered from some indeterminable place just off the Earth’s surface, as with all great rock and roll moments. The thud of the drums and the clash of the guitars give these pieces an almost tribal quality, you can see them being the soundtracks to an induction ceremony of a groovy cult or some such. You can also see why people in authority tried to belittle or destroy this kind of energy release when it was all fresh (see 13th Floor Elevators for a salutary lesson…) Elsewhere, Crack in Your Eye is a marvellous rumble of comic menace, propelled by the most ridiculous whoops and hollers, Vampyros Lesbos style.

Ridiculously good, ridiculously exciting.
