Some tracks are imbued with a sort of over-sated, lolloping inertia, (check out FauxTrails for a classic exhibition of teen ennui), whilst others are injected with a rush of glucose-driven adrenaline that only Youth is lucky enough to possess.

This is a marvellous and “marvellously inconsequential” record from Austria’s Wolfgang Möstl – known in this incarnation as Mile Me Deaf. That we’re not meant to dig too deep is hinted at by the cover artwork which shows two teenagers frolicking with candyfloss. If you took it as a visual summary of the record, you’d have to admit it’s pretty apt. Basically it’s “slacker” music.
So scuzzy pop is what we have: charming, messy and loud and sticky-fingered. A set of tales of “what it’s like to be young”…. Leaking Stuff is about a knackered car, probably his dad’s…. and the titles Skulker and Wild At Heart (a New Order –esque strum that seems to be about unvarnished lust) say it all. I’m sure you get the idea. You should be tired of this formula by now, especially if you’re my age but somehow Möstl has a way with his deadpan vox… Uplifting chord changes and clear, uncomplicated arrangements also breathe a certain joie de vivre into all of this teenage stuff.

As I’ve hinted at, there are some cute touches that mark Eat Skull out as an LP that has more to offer than the many records in this genre. The harmonica is a lot of fun on Troubles Caught and Skulker as is the fiddle(?) part on Hells Come Naturally, whereas You’re A Walking Maze is a glorious fuzz assault. The Scene Is Deaf is the sort of dreamy lament that pops up in these sorts of records; it’s a nice track too -what with the moog sounds and languid vocals. Last track Kill OR Watch Them Die takes the sort of gloopy atmospherics that we normally associate with Atlas Sound and creates a woozy narcissistic folly that seems to last for ever, (or the amount of time it takes to fix your hair at 17, the two timespans are interchangeable).
Enjoyable stuff all round!
