It’s got just the right amount of ridiculously fatuous self-pity about it. This is the stuff. The way it stops is grand too; just like that, without warning. Love this, it’s a blast, rock on!

Oh my word this is something else: the record starts off at a purposeful stomp and doesn’t really back off at any point, a march of guitars in Monolith heralding a new Pharaoh or someone – that there’s a delightful whiff of late 60s pomp in the background does little to put us off, quite the opposite in fact. I doubt the band would agree about that, but hey this is a slobbering reviewer, so they should zip up and take note. With Grace is an insistent hammering that sometimes has a grumpy sulk, but not for long; there’s Helm’s Deep to knock down and dawn’s on the way. You get the feeling that the Uruk Hai would have won if they’d had this kind of amplification. Sun’s Heat sounds just like that; a thousand black-clad Goffs melting in the sun’s glare all the while declaiming that bastard sun-tanned limp dick Apollo…. It’s sticky, lethargic and obviously grumpy as ‘owt.
Things get revitalised with the tremendously stentorian Between Walls, there’s some great growly riffage going on in here, and the semblance of a tune has us shaking at the knee. Disruption goes all Godspeed on us – weepy, elegiac chord changes and clubbed drums – but luckily normal service is resumed pretty quickly, banishing any thoughts of fair trade cotton as quickly as they appeared. We even get a soft female vocal going all gooey and making us feel that we’re thirteen again and the only recourse to a normal life is to go and mope around the bus-stop in the rain. It’s got just the right amount of ridiculously fatuous self-pity about it. This is the stuff. The way it stops is grand too; just like that, without warning. Love this, it’s a blast, rock on!
