Soon is a delightful five-track cabinet of curiosities, a discovery of intricate experimental sounds and troubled tones. The EP is a murky blend of pretty acoustic guitar and jazzy melodies cavorting with dark lyrics and weary vocals. The band strayed away from the plan to make a simple acoustic EP, opting to reveal unusual sound from usual objects to great effect. It’s an eerie and impulsive collection of striking, eccentric tracks. Who knew an ageing copy of The Catcher in the Rye could sound so good?
Glass Thing shows KIN is revelling in ‘found sound’ by making intriguing noise with everyday objects. Intense horn notes paint a sun-drenched, mirage-inducing savannah scene. The additional layering of stress-inducing, exaggerated, ticking clocks is reminiscent of exam room nightmares.
Unhinged melodies are often set to a climbing, unsettled lounge beat and played off Kim Foster’s quivery tones as she sings of the trails of the dead; Chemistry Set makes for a peculiar science lesson, a sure-fire hit on Dr Frankenstein’s ‘work’ playlist. Reptile’s low, catchy bass and croaking guiro juxtaposed with twinkling glockenspiel, set the drama nicely for the expressive vocals and jarring melodies of Awkward House.
So, it seems KIN have tea cups, a washing machine and a pile of newspapers, among other things, to thank. I’m off to make some noise with my humble possessions…
