You know, Boring Machines put out some pretty special sounds they really do. This release is something else again; a weird memory bubble re-floated by Toni C, of Hiroshima Rocks Around and Trouble vs. Glue (who Incendiary likes very much indeed). The record is a string of reminiscences based on his childhood trips in Eastern Europe and the Near East*. And once you know that it’s very noticeable, that a weird Sandman / Kosmonaut vibe builds up round tracks like Theta and Noeo, almost quaint examples of space travel, a pop Cluster working for the DDR, times past squinted at through a refracted prism; or a sort of forbidding realm where things could easily get out of hand if they are revisited. Just listen into the menacing and thick layers of sound in Prometheus; you’ll see what I mean.
Sonically this LP also picks up on things like Add N to X and Cluster (Noeo’s initially rich throbbing and bleeping groove coming on like Cluster II!) or at times (to use the second part of the extraordinary Noeo), Coil. It’s an unnerving listen at times; strange sounds get dropped into the well of infinity and we all wait for the splash on Upnos; after which we anxiously wait for the thing we threw in to crawl back out, mutated beyond recognition. Whereas a noise not dissimilar to a host of built up of ancient, worm eaten molecules, and led by someone with a mighty grudge about almost everything, occupies our time on Muo. It’s weirdly funny but sinister, all at once. Telos is a massively achieving endpoint too; a monstrous sub Numanoid road to nowhere that somehow mutates into a weird dance track.
Give yourself some time to get submerged in this ever-coagulating racket. It’s great!
*With his parents I hasten to add Lord forbid anything so irresponsible as letting a child loose ion the former Communist bloc!
