This is sassy German metropolitan pop; confident, fresh and cheeky. And it fits VERY well within this particular canon.

When I first heard Pollyester’s LP City of O late last year I thought, ‘nice enough, daft enough but well…’ it just didn’t grab me And after a few plays I left it to gather dust in my “played, liked, but don’t know what to do with” pile. Recently I got it out again and realised after a few spins that it’s quietly off its head. And immense fun. Want a whole song screaming out a phone number? It’s here. 2328628 if you must know.
The plinky plonky synths and TomTom Club/ I Want More shuffling disco beat are standard fare on here. Listening to In My Boots or the very Remain in Light-ish [sic!] Change Hands you can cotton on that this is sassy German metropolitan pop; confident, fresh and cheeky. And it fits VERY well within this particular canon. Even it it plays tootsie with the worst kind of mid ’80s, Club Med excesses. With this LP, (as well as Sabrina) you are reminded of Holger Czukay’s more poppy efforts as well as Anat Ben David, or Guido Moebius, or Chica and the Folder, or the stuff released by Staubgold and Monika, all those cats. Or Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick’s offshoot, Box Codax for that matter. Now, despite that list I wouldn’t for a minute suggest Pollyester’s latest is a formulaic record; it’s far too inventive for that. And there are some lovely bits that do look elsewhere; My Father’s Eye and LP closer City of Orion II are dreamboats. And Catrina, which is akin to Telex and Ottowan joining forces to re-record La Macarena. Things get even more dayglo with the unhinged sloth-disco of Jalousie; a marvellously OTT track; akin to Peter Cook dressing up as Marlene Dietrich and shouting ‘I Want to Be Alone’ on top of a double decker (look it up).
But hey this is German metropolitan pop. OK?
