Faun Fables – A Table Forgotten

Yes I know, another modern folk record drawing heavily on the Pentangle/Sandy Denny vibe. However this is never a bad thing, especially if the music is as good as it is on A Table Forgotten.

Yes I know, another modern folk record drawing heavily on the Pentangle/Sandy Denny vibe. However this is never a bad thing, especially if the music is as good as it is on A Table Forgotten. It’s a short release, more of an EP; which I suppose gives a welcome focus to the music.

The four tracks deal with the usual folksy subject matter (traditional dances, the countryside, old lore). However this doesn’t get in the way of a good tune; Pictures is a wonderful song, boasting soaring vocals coupled with a gentle arrangement that never sounds schmaltzy.

Faun Fables have seemingly realised that you need to keep things razor sharp in the instruments department and this helps their music no end. And the band plays with a spooky, sinister vibe that is well represented in With Words and Cake and A Table Forgotten. A Winter Sleep somehow reminds me of a prog Velvets, maybe it’s the sense of menace the track exudes. Promising stuff indeed.

This is the first release of theirs I’ve heard, and further investigation wielded at least 3 more mini LPs. On the strength of this I’ll be checking them all out.
